Hours: Monday-Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm - rotating weekend and Holidays

Summary:

Performs routine procedures and tasks related to animal care under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian or member of management.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine cage cleaning, handling, feeding, watering for a variety of laboratory animals.

  • Responsible for recognizing and reporting to supervision signs of illness, abnormal food and water consumption, abnormal stool, abnormal discharges and unusual behavior in lab animals.

  • Observes and detects changes in environmental conditions for one or more of several species of lab animals.

  • Monitor and document environmental conditions in animal housing rooms and daily observations of animal health

  • Perform routine housekeeping throughout the animal facility

  • Disposes of hazardous chemicals and waste

  • Operate manual and automated washing equipment

  • GMP compliant documentation

Additional Responsibilities:

  • This position performs a critical support function in providing services to scientific staff utilizing the services of Comparative Medicine. This position may require the ability to work unsupervised on weekends and/or after normal business hours.

  • Performs special assignments after appropriate, prior training with adequate supervision.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Must be able to work well with others and follow both oral and written instructions. Must attend in-house training for biohazards waste, chemical safety, blood borne pathogens and radioactive waste handling. Ongoing Occupational Health monitoring is a requirement of this position.

Education/Experience:

  • High School graduate or equivalent is required.

  • One year of animal caretaker/handling experience is required.

Occupational Demands:

Work is performed primarily in a laboratory/clinical environment. Exposure to animals, biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Exposed to occasional extreme cold below 32* in plasma freezer. Exposure to electrical office and laboratory equipment. Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments and gloves. Frequently stands while performing duties, 4-6 hours per day. Frequent hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Ability to make precise coordinated movements, of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects. Occasionally reaches above and below shoulder height. Occasionally walks. Occasionally bends and twists neck and waist. Frequent foot movements. Hearing acuity essential. Color perception/discrimination, near vision and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/30 and to 20/100 in the other eye. Moderate to heavy lifting with a maximum lift of 50lbs. Able to communicate complex information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken and written words and sentences.
