Automation Engineer

This position will report through the Maintenance and Engineering organization at the Grifols site in Clayton, NC. The position will support the Steriles Filling and Finishing (SFF) business unit. Examples of equipment packages include Autoclaves, Aseptic Filling, Vial Assembly, Staubli robots, WFI Stills, Clean Steam Generators and others.

This position will be the team leader for PCS Automation in the Filling area at Grifols-Clayton. Prioritize day to day activities for PCS Automation Engineering team supporting aseptic filling machines, oversealers, autoclaves, drying ovens, lyophilizers, pasteurizers, depyrogenation tunnels, vial rinsers, etc. System Administrator of DeltaV, SCADA, and Allen Bradley PLC systems. Fedegari Autoclaves and Staubli robot systems also supported. Responsible for network, hardware, software, and operational support. Responsible for accuracy of computer system life cycle documentation. Responsible for 24/7 automation support for Filling processes. Sought as SME for incident investigation and CAPAs. Executes small Automation process improvement projects and support capital projects as SME.Ensure work performed is compatible with production schedules. This position will have two automation engineer direct reports. Responsible for training, career development, and performance management for direct reports.

Principal Automation Engineer:

Primary responsibilities:

  • Project Management - Expert at leading large-scale projects, budget, planning, scheduling, logistics, procurement, communication, bid oversight, construction management, routine updates, qualifications.

  • Project Support - Work within a project team, teamwork, schedule adherence, execution, start-up, commissioning, owner interaction, qualifications

  • Provide SME Leadership in designated area/field. Depending on assignment, this may be DCS, PLC, SCADA, BAS, Validation, Manufacturing and Utilities Areas.

  • If assigned as Area lead; Provide support for process issues, troubleshooting, continuous improvement projects, system administration, and providing point of contact to Operations personnel.

  • Develop standards and provide expertise to management.

  • Communication - Will be responsible for providing excellent communications (verbal/written) within area of responsibility.

  • Use/demonstrate problem solving skills to best support and meet the needs within area of responsibility.

  • Promotes a collaborative and cooperative environment which embraces the ability to work effectively within teams.

  • Supervision: Supervise other Automation engineers or staff. Maintains accountability; Oversee employee career path, training plan, performance evaluation, and development opportunities; Oversee employee career path, training plan, performance evaluation, and development opportunities; Coaches, counsels, manages and directs personnel in appropriate assignments relative to priorities, sense of urgency and utilization of skill sets. Performs resource planning for the group; Frequently interacts cross-functionally with peer managers. Normally requires the ability to resolve conflict and work out solutions between groups; and, communicates higher level decisions/vision in the context of how it matters to the employees.

  • Capable of adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GxP) - Compliance, Change Control, Quality Oversight, Validation.

  • After hours support may be required.

Principal Engineer Level:

Master’s Degree - Engineering, Automation, Computer, Industrial, Manufacturing, Related and 6 years of direct experience in automation engineering and/or validation or

Bachelor’s degree - Engineering, Automation, Computer, Industrial, Manufacturing, Related and 8 years of direct experience in automation engineering and/or validation.

No equivalent combination of education other than what is provided in this section will be accepted.

Work is performed in an office and a laboratory/manufacturing environment. Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Exposed to occasional extreme cold below 32

  • and high levels of noise in production areas. Exposure to electrical office and laboratory equipment. Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments and gloves. Frequently sits for 4-6 hours per day. May stand; bends and twists neck and waist for 2-4 hours per day. Frequent hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Ability to make precise coordinated movements, of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects. Occasionally walks. Frequent foot movements. Light to moderate lifting and carrying objects with a maximum lift of 50lbs. Near vision and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/30 and to 20/100 in the other eye. Able to communicate complex information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken and written words and sentences. Performs tasks by following a set of written or oral instructions/procedures.
