Summary:

The Engineering Technician - Instrumentation is the subject matter expert responsible for maintaining and performing independent troubleshooting of plant instrumentation and control systems.

Primary responsibilities for role:

  • Work independently to troubleshoot and provide sound technical and engineering solutions for complex equipment, process and control issues

  • Locate/identify replacement parts, coordinate multiple and interdisciplinary work requests, and investigate equipment repair history using the CMMS

  • Implement various projects. Define the scope, specifications, and work with vendors.

  • Support the commissioning and validation of the equipment and any Computerized Maintenance Management System requirements.

  • Develop and perform calibration on various types of process instrumentation and control elements.

  • Troubleshoot, coordinate schedules, and perform corrective maintenance on process instrumentation and control elements

  • Provide detailed documentation of all calibration, troubleshooting, and repair activities.

  • Issue/complete job hazard analysis/safe work permits (hot work, excavating, confined space, hazardous atmosphere, etc.)

  • Use a Computerized Maintenance Management System to document work activity

  • Adhere to cGMP, Safety and Environmental requirements

  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, job plans and/or equipment manuals to perform work

  • Responsible for maintaining training curriculum requirements.

  • Develop and administer qualification requirements

  • Assist with modification, installation and start up of new and existing instrumentation, process control systems and equipment

  • Assume role of Lead Technician and Supervisor Designate

  • Oversee contractor performance

  • Train and mentor other technicians

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Proficient at the Instrumentation Technician 3 job level.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities as defined in previous job levels

  • Technical expertise in all types of calibration and troubleshooting. Knowledge of various types of process equipment used in multiple plant processes. This position will be involved in complicated process or control issues as they arise and provide technical and engineering solutions.

  • Demonstrated high degree of independent work and sound decision making.

  • Capable of performing engineering calculations.

  • Able to read and fully understand technical documentation (i.e. piping and instrument diagrams, instrument loop diagrams, electrical schematics, precision machine part drawing, programmable ladder logic, mechanical assembly, software function documents, sequence of operations, Original Equipment Manufacturer information in order to effectively complete tasks.

  • Willing to initiate and drive system change as needed for robustness of systems. Able to specify new field equipment that follows plant standards for material clearance and ease of maintenance.

  • Possess and demonstrate a high level of working knowledge and aptitude with thermodynamics, compressed gases, hydraulics, high purity water systems, pumps, valves, programmable logic controllers, human machine interfaces, robotics, variable frequency drives, digital control systems (Delta V, ABB, Andover). Capable of software program parameter and logic states review to facilitate troubleshooting and remediation.

  • Able to define scope, specifications, and work with vendors to implement various projects as assigned including supporting the commissioning and validation of the equipment and any Computerized Maintenance Management System requirements.

  • Experienced and proficient with design/layout, along with the proven ability to work independently, delivering solid, reliable solutions to un-reliable or obsolete equipment and/or processes.

  • Knowledge of industrial plant safety and environmental requirements including Process Safety Management and Risk Management Plans

  • Possess leadership abilities

Requirements:

  • Associates degree in a relevant technical field

  • 8 years relevant experience

Directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience and/or competencies may be considered in place of the stated requirements.

Occupational Demands:

Work is performed in a manufacturing environment or warehouse with rotating shifts. Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Exposure to chemicals, electrical manufacturing equipment, hand tools and moving machinery. Operates forklifts, tractors and power equipment. Exposure to high levels of noise and to dust/gas/fumes/steam. Exposure to extreme cold below 32* and on occasion, exposure to extreme heat above 100*. Exposure to vibration or oscillating movements of the extremities or the whole body. Occasional entry into confined spaces, requiring kneeling, crawling, climbing and squatting. Works at heights on scaffolding and/or on ladders. Walks on uneven ground. Personal protective equipment required such as; protective eyewear, chemical suits, safety shoes and/or rubber footwear, gloves, hearing protection and a respirator. Heavy lifting and carrying of 45lbs. for up to 6-8 hours per day, with a maximum lift of 75lbs. Work is performed standing, walking, bending and twisting waist for 4-6 hours per day. Frequent foot movements. Occasionally reaches above and below shoulder height. Occasionally bends and twists neck. Frequent hand movements with simple grasping of one hand with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists. Ability to make precise coordinated movements, of the fingers to grasp and manipulate objects. Hearing acuity essential. Color perception/discrimination, depth perception and far vision correctable in one eye to 20/30 and to 20/100 in the other eye. Able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken and written words and sentences. Performs a wide range of complex tasks. Adheres to a work schedule to meet production standards.
